How Long Do Boveda Packs Last? 4 Key Factors

For cigar enthusiasts, proper storage is an absolute must. The flavor, burn quality, and aroma all depend heavily on the cigar’s humidity. This is why Boveda Packs have become so popular among smokers.

Boveda’s 2-Way Humidity Control Packs cover a variety of needs for cigar users. Not only do they provide short-term humidification for your cigars. They also help age your cigars.

Perhaps what’s most surprising about Boveda packs is that they can be used for a variety of products. This ranges from cannabis to musical instruments to food.

So, how long do humidity packs last? Below, we guide you through everything you need to know.

Boveda packs are moisture-regulating packets. They're made from natural salts, purified water, and a patented permeable membrane.

The aim is for the external portion of the product to be durable, but absorbent enough to allow moisture in. The inside contains a non-toxic solution. This is safe to store with consumable products.

The product membrane plays an important role in how the product works. It allows water vapor to pass through, but keeps the interior solution contained. When humidity drops in the packs’ vicinity, it will automatically release moisture. Alternatively, if the air is too humid, the packs will absorb the moisture in the air.

This helps to retain a standard PH level in the packs’ surrounding environment. It protects your products, preventing them from drying out or becoming too wet.

How Long Do Boveda Packs Last?

So, how long does Boveda last? Unfortunately, there’s no universal answer to this question. This is because the company has such a huge range of humidity pouches. Each of these serves a different function. Generally speaking, Boveda packs can last anywhere from two to six months.

How long they last also depends on:

  • The surrounding environment
  • Whether they’re in a sealed container
  • How many cigars you’re storing together
  • How many Boveda packs you’re using

Factors That Affect the Lifespan of Boveda Packs

Now that we’ve answered “how long does a Boveda pack last?”, we can move on to storage. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to expand the lifespan of your Boveda packs. Once you understand these, you’ll be able to use your packs for much longer, getting the most out of the product.

  • Airtightness: First and foremost, the airtightness of your humidor plays a major role in your Boveda pack’s lifespan. A cigar humidor that is properly sealed will allow the pack to last longer.
  • Size: If your humidor is particularly large, the pack will have more moisture to regulate. This depletes the pack’s resources more quickly.
  • Cigar Packs: Likewise, if you’re storing large batches of cigars together, this can deplete lifespan. A bigger collection will require more packs.
  • Use of Humidor: If you’re using your humidor a lot, opening and closing it frequently, this will affect your packs. This is because the balanced air sealed in your humidor escapes. The packs have to work to restabilize it.

How to Know When to Replace a Boveda Pack

But how do you know when it’s time to replace a Boveda pack? Thankfully, it’s quite easy to tell when packs are getting old.

  • First and foremost, check the texture of your packs. If they feel stiff and dry, that’s a sign they’ve reached the end of their lifespan.
  • In addition, the inside of the pack should feel gel-like. If it feels crunchy and hard, it’s best to throw them out.
  • Finally, you’ll be able to tell your packs need replacing when they’re no longer able to maintain humidity. You’ll notice your hygrometer drop below the pack’s RH level, signalling it’s no longer doing its job.

Best Practices to Maximize Lifespan of a Boveda Pack

How can you effectively increase the lifespan of your Boveda packs? This is an important question, and allows you to get the most out of the product. Follow the steps below to maximize your Boveda packs’ usability.

Choose the Correct RH Level

You need to make sure you’re choosing the right humidity (RH) level for your cigars. Boveda packs come in a variety of RH levels, including 58%, 62%, 69%, 72%, and 75%. Matching this properly will help keep your cigars in the best smoking condition.

Use More Packs

This next point might sound counterintuitive. To preserve your cigars, you need to be using the correct number of packs for your humidor. This might mean purchasing multiple Boveda packs. As a rule of thumb, one 60-gram Boveda pouch is recommended for every 25 cigars. This way, they’ll be able to maintain a more even level of humidity.

Don’t Mix Packs

Make sure you’re not mixing packs with different humidity levels in the same humidor. The packs will work against each other. This affects the proper preservation of your cigars. In addition, make sure not to mix Boveda packs with other preservatives. This includes humidification crystals or beads. Boveda packs work best when used exclusively.

Store In An Airtight Environment

Make sure you’re storing your packs in an airtight container. That could be a humidor, a tupperware container, or a ziplock bag. If you’re allowing the moisture to escape, your packs will dry up much faster.

Do Not Recharge

There’s a common misconception that Boveda packs are rechargeable, but this is not true. There’s no guarantee you’ll be able to maintain the correct RH level upon recharging. This will  potentially compromise the storage of your cigars.

Enjoy Your Cigars with the Right Humidity

Boveda packs are one of the most popular ways to retain correct humidity levels in cigar storage. Generally, users can expect packs to last between 2-6 months. But, following the steps above, you’ll be able to increase their lifespan to the higher end of that variable.
