First produced at the El Laguitos Factory in Havana, the Trinidad Reyes was manufactured not to be sold commercially, but handed out personally by Fidel Castro as diplomatic gifts.

A few sources contest this claim, but the quality and craftsmanship of the Trinidad Reyes is undeniable. This is one of the world great cigars - it’s just hard to get your hands on one.

Trinidad Reyes Overview

Similar to the minuto format, these petite firecrackers are only 4.3” long with a ring gauge of 40. The Trinidad Reyes (or kings as they’re affectionately called) are an expertly rolled, classic Cuban.

With a milky brown wrapper and a pigtail cap, these sticks have a predraw that smells light and flowery like meadows in the sunshine.

Trinidad Reyes was considered a select secret of the Cuban cigar industry and were only sold at auction in the early 1990s at the “Dinner of the Century” in Paris. They were sold at the first commercial auction soon after that memorable night, a box going for a whopping $11,400.

The Trinidad Reyes were introduced to wider sale with two other new vitolas, the Coloniale and the Robusto Extra, in November of 2003.

Smoking a Trinidad Reyes

A Trinidad king (reyes means king in English) has a lot of body for a little stick. It starts strongly with sweet hay, leather, and decidedly spicy notes of pink peppercorns.

The first third subsides into grassiness with hints of caramel, and halfway through, at about 20 minutes, creamy notes of coconut and a tang of anise start to seep through the toasty grass flavors.

The second third evolves into deeper notes of cappuccino with a dark, heavy sweetness. This is a smooth smoke without dryness or pepperiness on the retrohale.

This stick goes out with a bang, with toastiness, ground cloves, and dark coffee merging for a clean finish. Smoking time is a quick 35 minutes, and the flavors deepen and mature in the final third.

Cigar Value

These quick smokes are an excellent choice if you’re short on time but still want the full feeling you get from a great Cuban cigar. They’re a little spicy at first but benefit handsomely from time in the humidor. Smoke one and you can understand why they used to sell at $700 a piece at auction.

Trinidad Reyes Experience

A Trinidad Reyes is ideal for a lovely weekend afternoon and pairs well with dark coffee or whiskey. Even though it’s a quick smoke, it has an almost unparalleled flavor profile and an incredibly smooth retrohale.
