Cuba is famous for many things, the cigars being one of the premium products that are produced here. One of the main factors that contribute to this notoriety is the Vuelta Abajo region. This area is located in the heart of the island state and it is rated by many connoisseurs as the best area to plant tobacco in the whole world. Around this region, there are other premium plantations but Vuelta Abajo is definitely the most famous.

1. Why this area?

Vuelta Abajo is located in an area that has excellent soil for the tobacco plant. As we know, each plant requires a specific type of soil and certain minerals in order to grow. Well, Vuelta Abajo has this incredibly fertile soil that is full of minerals and nutrients.

Second of all, the humidity here is just perfect. We all know that Cuba is an island nation that is surrounded by water. Well, besides this fact, the state is located in an area that can be defined as tropical in terms of climate. This is a very important factor when we are talking about tobacco. This great humidity helps the tobacco plant grow fast and healthy. As a fun fact, most of the humidors in which the cigars are stored replicate the conditions from this area in order to preserve the cigars.

2. The heritage

Vuelta Abajo first started being a plantation area in the 19th century. Yes, there are many other places on earth that served as tobacco plantations for longer but this particular area was chosen as the next premium area thanks to the soil and weather conditions. Moreover, here tobacco farming is a family tradition. Even though all the farms are partially owned by the local and partially by the state, all the people who work in this area have a great passion for cigars and for premium tobacco. One of the greatest cigars in the world, Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robustos get their brand name from a specific village in this area.

3. The types of tobacco

Being one of the premium areas in the world, only certain types of tobacco are planted here. You have to consider that the area is not extremely large like the vast tobacco plantations in other countries so only the best of the best are planted here. The types of tobacco were selected in time based on the feedback of the smokers and now you can find only the best species of tobacco.

There are many great tobacco producers that buy the raw materials from this area in order to manufacture the premium Cuban cigars. The wrapper, the binder, and the filler are all purchased from this area and this is one of the reasons why the Cuban cigars are the best.

4. The taste

The taste of the cigar is given primarily by the wrapper and the filler. Regular tobacco cigars tend to have a very uniform taste that doesn’t really differ very much from producer to producer. This is why Vuelta Abajo tobacco is ranked as the best in the world. Besides the fact that only the best species of tobacco are planted in this area, the drying process and all the additional steps give personality to each batch of cigars.

Thanks to this fact, the Cuban cigars manufactured from this type of tobacco have an amazing and personality, a great example being Cohiba Piramides Extra. There are many other types of cigars that feature amazing taste palettes thanks to this particular tobacco.

5. The burn

The Vuelta Abajo tobacco features a very specific burn thanks to the characteristics of the plant. The burn is generally very even and the resulting ash is gray. The regular tobacco can have a hotter burn and the ash will often time be white. This is also a great way to see if a Cuban cigar is fake or not. More than that, Vuelta Abajo tobacco goes through a very strict process of selection before being used for the cigars while regular tobacco used for cheaper cigars is not too regulated. In general, we can conclude that Vuelta Abajo tobacco is the ultimate choice for cigar production.
